Weaving Stories
Threads of Change, was the culmination of an intensive effort to document the textile traditions of North East India, by Ministry of Culture, IGNCA & National Institute of Design. We were commissioned to help tell the story of the first phase of documentation in Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, through a 2 week long exhibition at IGNCA, Delhi.
A key challenge in the design for the exhibition was to find a thread that could bring together research material generated by close to 200 volunteers—textile design graduates, student designers, photographers, videographers and historians—over 4 years. Working with the core research team at NID, we pieced together the exhibition narrative, creating thematic clusters based on on usage, rituals, materials and other parameters for over 100 artefacts collected during the research. The artefacts were supported by rich photographic documentation and copy recreated by the research team from field notes.
